Transparency builds trust

After my lessons today, I had conversations with three lovely parents who dropped by to ask me questions about their children’s project requirements. We ended up talking for a good 90 mins, not only about their children’s progress in class during the year but also discussing education in general across both public and private systems.
Today, It seems that education has never been such a hot topic of conversation. Parents, more than anything want their children to have their curiosity sparked, to be engaged in the creative flow, for their children to find independence in learning, to have outcomes to show as evidence of their work and for their children to be socially happy.
After 200 more online conversations during the past 48 hours, I found individuals passionate about education, its reforms and in search of strategies and solutions and so I have decided to share my conversations.
The parents listed the aspects of learning that they had observed and particularly embraced:-
1) the sparks of curiosity
2) the time and focus their children had dedicated to project work in order to secure admirable outcomes
3) the joys and learning opportunities from working in groups 4) their children’s ability to confidently show other children the skills they had learned in the classroom
5) the blend of traditional modes of learning and topics with new e.g. paper-based storyboards, digital stop-motion animation stories, and e-safety topics
6) the documentation of process and ePortfolio evidence
7) continuous learning conversations with parents and pupils
8) smooth workflow and the agility with which the pupils were able to handle different file types, different devices and platforms, cloud and local apps
9) openness and transparency
This is when the penny dropped. Openness and transparency had never been one of my conscious objectives.
Communication, collaboration, reflective thinking, seamless workflow, and creative output had been!
Then and there these parents had opened my eyes and at that moment I realised that this is what parents are possibly yearning the most - the ability to connect and communicate with teachers on the methods of learning, not just test results and jumping through hoops and homework, but how their children really learned. Perhaps schools and universities have created walls, perhaps these are not consciously created, but maybe they exist.
I wonder what others want most out of the formal education for their children...
